Vaginal tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue in the vagina, a female reproductive organ. The uncontrolled growth of abnormal tissue can cause the cancer. Most of the primary vaginal tumors start in skin cells called squamous cells. Other than that, there are 3 parts in the vaginal also can get the vaginal tumors such as adenocarcinoma, melanoma and sarcoma. Usually the women who get the tumor at squamous is over 50 while the age who get the adenocarcinoma is around 19.

There are several causes of vaginal tumor and the most tumors occur when another cancer such as endometrical or cervical cancer spreads. This also knows as secondary vaginal cancer.

Women exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) as a fetus (that is, their mothers took DES during pregnancy) are at increased risk for developing clear cell carcinoma. Other than that, DES also increases the likelihood of vaginal adenosis (gland type cells in the vaginal lining rather than the usual squamous cells). The women with vaginal adenosis never develop vaginal clear cell carcinoma.
